Have you ever wondered what it takes to have a genealogy blog? Whether amateur or professional, blogging is a great way not only to publish family information, but to find information from others. Lisa Lisson, author of the “Are You My Cousin?” blog, stopped by for a chat last year and told me all about it. Listen in and learn why blogging is good for your work, platforms, content, publication to social media, the use of mailing lists, and blogs that Lisa herself reads. She has a lot of terrific advice and information.
Hello, and welcome to episode 405 of From Paper To People Podcast from Ancestors Alive! Genealogy. My name is Carolynn ni Lochlainn, and I am your hostess with the mostest for the next half hour or so. I want to start by thanking my new Patreon patron, Paula Craigo, who joined at the Vines level, $7.50 per month. Thank you so much for that support, Paula. And, Charles Andrews has increased his support to the Branch level, at $10 per month. Thank you so much for your support and faith Charles, and for all of your good conversation on Twitter. Canadian History Teacher also joined, and I really appreciate that, as well.
We had a May question! The swag at stake was a pair of limited-edition inlaid wood bookmarks bearing the podcast’s name in antique script. Since there were only 4 responses out of 21 supporters, Sarah Kroh, Margaret Eves and Kara Carey each got one, with the winning entry going to new patron Paula Craigo! Congratulations, ladies.
The monthly question is, yes you guessed it, monthly on Patreon. The idea is to stimulate conversation on the platform AND for supporters to have a chance to get a little something extra. Not everyone is on Facebook, so some listeners miss out on the discussions there. To be a part of the fun, become a supporter at patreon.com/ancestorsalive, and you’ll have access to those monthly posts. Patron levels start at $5/month. There’s even a new rewards program for sustained support.
This episode is all about having a genealogy blog, and to be sure I got you the best information possible, I sat down with Lisa Lisson last year to have a discussion. After all, I don’t really blog, and Lisa is at the top of the game. It took me a year to get this to editing, but her advice is no less timely than it was in 2020! She discusses everything – platforms, content, editing, publication to social media, and more. Here now is the interview.

I hope Lisa’s sage advice helps those of you who have blogs, and that those of you who don’t have a blog join the ranks. We can all use our skills better to publish our findings, thereby assisting others who are seeking ancestors and family.
